Transition Instructions
Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

cat does love the dry version
By pcaddict on Dec 7, 2021
Had to take my cat to the animal hospital. He started blocking and they had to keep him overnight to flush his kidneys out. They sent the wet version of this food home and my piggy boy will not eat it. No matter what I add to it. So I picked up the dry version from my local vet's office and he loves it. I had placed the order on Chewy, but it took a while to get the approval through and I had to find something he would eat. Though I sent the discharge papers from the hospital in with my order stating what food he could eat and that he would have to be on it for life. Chewy still had to contact the hospital, since they did not consider it a prescription. I think it is crazy that you had Had to take my cat to the animal hospital. I think it is crazy that you had to have a prescription for it since it is not required by the FDA and has no medication in it. It is Hill's that requires it. I am also not happy that you cannot buy just a couple of cans of wet food first to see even if your pet will eat it. I have a whole case of wet (minus a couple of cans) that the hospital sent home. I will try one more time to see if I can get him to eat it. But if not I will donate to the shelter. … more

Did the trick!
By Allayloo on Nov 13, 2021
Our cat was urinating outside the litterbox. The vet tested a sample of his urine and found it had crystals in it that were likely irritating him or causing discomfort. He prescribed a diet of this food, although he recommended the cans of it because of the higher water content which would help flush out the crystals. Since the cans were so much more expensive, we compromised and give him canned food for two small meals per day and dry food for the other four small meals We can't leave food out for our cats or they inhale it all in one sitting. We also bought a pet fountain to encourage him to drink more water. It worked; he stopped going outside the litter box! We give our cat his food first Our cat was urinating outside the litterbox. It helps that he's the only male. … more

My cats love this!!
By cyn7 on Dec 6, 2021
I got this from my vet and it has become a favorite for ALL 6 of my cats. I have to dole it out to the two who NEED it, but the others will get some to keep them healthy. I am so thankful to find a food they all love.

I received my order in a very timely manner and am grateful for the service Chewy always offers. #1 in my cat's opinion
By Mary on Nov 30, 2021
My cat has been on this Rx food for 2 years. After his surgery, we tried multiple bags of dry food and this one is the only one he eats and likes. The morsel size is perfect for him and apparently the taste is, too.

Stressed kitty
By Beysmama on Nov 13, 2021
My kitkat has idiopathic cystitis linked to stress. She's been eating Hill's Urinary Care for about a year and has done well. She likes the taste; the caveat being she's my little piggy kitty and will eat anything.

Good food for urinary issues
By Elwin on Nov 9, 2021
This is the only food I've been feeding my cat since I got her from the shelter several years ago. This food, along with wet c/d food, seems to keep her issues in check, and she likes the food!

Took too long to receive
By CatFood on Oct 1, 2021
I have this on autoship and usually get my shipments within 1-3 days. However, my last shipment took 8 days to receive. I was already really low on food. If you need food for your cats right away, don't depend on the shipping time frame. The reliability of shipments from Chewy within their proposed time frame has gown downhill lately. Do yourself a favor and pick up at the dog store.

Changeover to this food was easy.
By Ginny on Sep 30, 2021
I had previously fed my cat Hills Science Diet Hairball Control dry food for adult cats 7+. The vet wants her to eat this Urinary Care c/d food now. The changeover to this food was easy. She eats it with no problem. However, she doesn't like the Hills Science Diet Urinary Care c/d wet food.
